Contractor Verification

How to verify an electrician

Before allowing electrical work to be carried out, it is sensible to check who the contractor is, whether their details can be verified and whether the work will be properly documented.

Key guidance

This page is part of the TESC electrical safety guidance library.

Why verification matters

  • Electrical work affects fire safety, shock protection and long-term property compliance.
  • A low price alone does not prove competence, insurance, traceability or proper certification.
  • Verification helps landlords, agents and homeowners keep a clearer record of who carried out the work.

Basic checks before booking

  • Ask for the contractor trading name, address, contact details and website.
  • Check whether they provide written quotations, certificates and clear inspection reports.
  • Ask whether the electrical certificate or EICR can be filed or independently checked after completion.

Warning signs

  • No written quotation or paperwork.
  • Refusal to provide company details.
  • Pressure to pay cash with no record.
  • Very vague descriptions of what will be inspected, tested or certified.
