What does an EICR check?
An EICR is not simply a quick look at sockets. A competent inspector should assess the condition of the fixed electrical installation, identify visible damage or deterioration, check protective devices, test circuits and record observations that affect electrical safety.
The inspection can include consumer units, earthing and bonding, RCD protection, circuit condition, signs of overheating, damaged accessories, exposed conductive parts, unsuitable alterations and other issues that may affect safe use of the installation.
What does the result mean?
An EICR is usually recorded as either satisfactory or unsatisfactory. A satisfactory report means the installation is considered acceptable for continued use at the time of inspection. An unsatisfactory report means further action is required before the installation should be treated as compliant.
Unsatisfactory reports normally contain one or more C1, C2 or FI observations. C3 observations are improvement recommendations and do not usually make the report unsatisfactory on their own.
Can I check an EICR online?
Some EICRs are issued only as PDF or paper reports, which can make later verification difficult. The TESC EICR Register provides an online lookup for certificates that have been filed through the TESC platform.
If a certificate is not found on the TESC Register, that does not automatically mean it does not exist. It means no matching record has been found in this database.
